Metalurh Donetsk Career

Metalurh Donetsk (2003 – 2005)

Arsene Wenger has admitted that missing out on signing Yaya in 2003 remains one of his greatest ever regrets. But despite a trial with his brother Kolo’s club, in the form of a pre-season friendly against Barnet, paperwork problems dogged the move and ultimately Yaya went on to sign for the Ukrainian team where he learned discipline and hard work.

Yaya made his European debut in August of 2004, claiming an assist as Donetsk beat Tiraspol 3-0 in the UEFA Cup, 2nd qualifying round. Within 18 months his performances for Metalurh Donetsk earned him an international call-up and attracted the attentions of Olympiakos.
